FILLING UP

Sometimes I get too busy to fill up. I may drive past the pumps five or six times knowing that I need to pull in, but decide to put it off until a more convenient time. Fortunately, I have a little reminder on the instrument panel in my truck, a little yellow light illuminating these words: LOW FUEL. It’s a warning that lets me know I don’t have much left in the tank and I need to fill up.

At the very center of your life and mine there is a place that needs to be filled. It begins by accepting God’s grace and forgiveness through the atoning death and victorious resurrection of Jesus. It continues as a life of faith where we continually allow the Holy Spirit to “clean out the tank” and to fill us with the love of God. For the Christian, love is the fuel that makes our engines run. But we can’t produce our own fuel. Our hearts and our spirits will never be “energy independent.” 1st John, Chapter 4 tells us that “love is from God,” and “We love, because He first loved us.” We can’t produce love; but we can receive it from the endless supply of God. Has your low fuel light come on recently? Are you in need of a “fill up?” Pull in to the station of God’s grace and receive from the vast reserves of His great love!

This past Sunday, my “tank” was filled as I listened to Bucky Dixon, Judy Persons, John Bryan and Jan McMichael, as they shared their inspiring stories of how they have experienced God’s great love. I want to thank our Lay Leader, John Clem, for putting together Laity Sunday, and for all those who took part in this special service. Pine Forest is a strong, healthy church, made up of individuals whose hearts are filled with the love of God.

This Sunday, we welcome one of our own to the 9:00 a.m. service, as Al Purser will be preaching. Al is the pastor of Pine Hill United Methodist Church and a gifted communicator of the gospel. It’s always a blessing to hear a message from Dr. Joel Dent, and he will be preaching at 8:45 and at 11:00. Invite a friend and come this Sunday to Pine Forest, God’s Filling Station for His love!

SENIOR FORESTER FELLOWSHIP
All seniors are invited to our fall kick-off event on Tuesday, September 14, for the Senior Forester’s Covered Dish Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish. Joan Wehner and Fonnie Hall will be arranging for some of the basic food items to be brought in, so call Joan (275-1795) or Fonnie (274-1129) if you want to volunteer for a particular dish. We don’t have reservation sheets for this event, but ask that you call Joan, the church office (272-2441), Joyce Dent (274-9806) or Sue Hall (272-7297), so we will have an approximate count for set-up. Invite guests! Our program will be Joel Radney’s Travelers Quartet.

Smoked Turkey and Ribs
The Youth/Music Ministries are having a fundraiser to assist the Joey Williams family, selling whole turkeys ($25) or slabs of ribs ($15) cooked by Southern Heritage. The meat will be available for pick-up at the church on Friday, October 1. Joey is self-employed and has been hospitalized throughout the summer with complications from back surgery; currently he is a patient at a local nursing facility for rehab. Their two sons are actively involved in our youth activities. All proceeds will go toward defraying Joey’s medical expenses. Thank you for helping us to bless this family!

CHILDREN’S NEWS ...from Kim & Susan
9:00 Parent Volunteer: Cecilia Schenck
September 5 – No evening activities due to the Labor Day holiday.
Do you love children’s laughter? Do you enjoy the look on their face when something clicks and they have a new understanding of the lesson you are teaching? What about the excitement that all kids have just in being kids? These things and so much more are waiting for the volunteers for the kids program. If you can give an hour a week for one month a year and a few minutes each week preparing for the lesson please give Kim Dixon or Susan Wilson a call. The lessons are scripted and the materials are provided for you. All we ask is that you pray for the kids and come prepared for your hour of service. Thanks for taking time to prayerfully consider this.

Music Notesfrom Mary
Children’s Handbells and Golden Notes are off to a great start! There are still a few select openings for both choirs so if you are interested, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Children’s Handbells are Wednesdays 5-5:45 for students in grades 2-5 and no prior experience is necessary.   Golden Notes is limited to those age 50 and better (unless you’re Jean Murphy who is perpetually 35!) and they meet Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Each month Golden Notes also sings at a local assisted living or nursing facility and then enjoys lunch together.
Adult Handbells starts on Tuesday, September 7 at 7:15---I can’t wait to see you and wasn’t that terrific to see our own Debbie Newman ring that amazing handbell solo on Sunday? We have several beginners this year as well as seasoned ringers like Debbie! If you’ve been thinking about ringing bells, why not try it as we start out our new year?
Children, you did terrific on Sunday morning singing at our combined worship service! THANK YOU for singing so well and taking on that leadership role. Way to go!
Due to Labor Day on Monday, there are no children’s or youth choir rehearsals this Sunday.

YOUTH News…from Jared
I want to especially congratulate Joseph Payne and Jake Williams. At the beginning of the summer several of our youth accepted the challenge of reading their Bibles through in 90 days. Many of our youth participated in this difficult challenge and these two made it to the end! May we as a church family see this accomplishment and be challenged to read our Bibles.
There will be no youth activities this Sunday due to the Rafting Trip. We have 43 people heading to Tennessee for our fall retreat. Keep us in your prayers this weekend.
Thanks to everyone who supported our Spaghetti Lunch this past Sunday. You help us raise over $1200 for this years Ski Trip!
Over the past few weeks we have been experiencing record numbers in most of our youth programs. Thank you parents for committing to bring your youth each week to all that we have going on. And, thanks to all of our volunteers who make our youth ministry a success. I am convinced that one of the catalysts for our growth is our Life Groups. These groups meet throughout the week and introduce our youth to biblical accountability. If you would like more information about how your youth can be a part of these groups contact Jared at the church office.
